WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIREMENTS ORDER NO. 3
WILLIAM LONG, SCOTT LONG, AND
LONG RANCH, INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Approximately 10,100 gallons per day (gpd) of wastewater will be produced from the existing
ranching and expanded slaughterhouse operations. Wastewater will be discharged continuously
to the holding pond.
The Discharger characterized each of the wastestreams from the slaughterhouse operations.
The average characteristics of the process wastewater is as follows:
Compound Concentration (mg/1)
BOD5-day 409
TKN 191
Nitrate 15
TDS 1095
TVDS 757
The existing wastewater holding pond is approximately 60 by 600 by 9 feet deep. The pond
extends only 1 foot below grade. Pond sizing was evaluated by a Registered Engineer and was
determined to be adequate for the expanded ranching operations. The pond is unlined, but has
been sealed with solids that have settled and compacted. Fencing and warning signs will be
installed around the pond.
The Discharger proposes to grow and harvest a mixture of alfalfa, silage corn, and oats on the
cropland properties. Alfalfa will be grown throughout the year on 2/3 of the designated
disposal area. Silage corn and oats will be rotated on the remaining portion of the cropland.
Wastewater from the storage pond will be periodically applied to provide the nitrogen
requirement for the crops. The organic loading rate was calculated to be approximately 1.1
pound per acre per day (lb/ac/day) and approximately 110 lb/ac/year for nitrogen.
Baseline soil samples were collected from the designated disposal areas in May to June 1999.
The analytical results were reported in the RWD as follows:
Concentration Range
Compound In Milligrams per Kilogram (mg/kg)
Nitrate as Nitrogen 2.0 - 10.7
Phosphate as Phosphorus 3.1 - 67.1
Potassium 38 - 105
Two septic systems will be used to dispose of domestic wastes. The existing and proposed
systems are located near the shop. The new septic system and leachfield will be installed
leading from the slaughterhouse.
