WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIREMENTS ORDER NO. 2
WILLIAM LONG, SCOTT LONG, AND
LONG RANCH, INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
passed over a solids separator consisting of two screens. The manured wastewaters then flow
into the pond and the manure solids fall into an open, concrete masonry vault where they are
subsequently moved to a manure storage area. Stored manure solids are covered with plastic to
control flies. Approximately 6 cubic feet per day of manured solids are produced from the
ranching operations. Manure solids are transported off-site approximately two times per year,
but occasionally may be applied and tilled into the cropland prior to planting.
The Discharger uses spray and bait to control flies. The spray is used daily in the processing
area and twice weekly in the ranching area. Fly bait is used daily around the perimeter of the
facilities.
Manured wastewaters contained in the pond are recirculated (only once) for additional
shed/barn flushing. Approximately 2100 gallons per day of manured wastewaters are produced
from the ranching operations.
Wastewater from the ranching operations has been characterized by the Discharger as follows:
Concentration
Compound In Milligrams per liter (mg/1)
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5_day) 3300
Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) 510
Nitrate 7.2
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) 1900
Total Volatile Dissolved Solids (TVDS) 620
Wastewaters from the slaughterhouse operations are produced from animal and carcass
rinsings, kill floor rinses, and hot bath waters and rinsewaters used for hair removal. Whole
blood is captured and is transferred to a holding tank for transport off site. Three drains,
covered with metal screens, are used to capture the wastewaters from the slaughterhouse, which
gravity drain to a grease trap. The liquid wastes are then pumped to the wastewater holding
pond. Approximately 8000 gallons of wastewater are produced daily from the slaughterhouse
operations.
The Discharger uses cleaning solutions that are comprised of degreasers and disinfectants.
Approximately 55 gallons and 12 gallons of degreasers and disinfectants, respectively, are used
annually. These cleaning solutions are diluted (approximately 34,000 to 1) as they are
discharged with the process wastewater.
Screenings are periodically manually collected for off-site removal by a tallow operation. Solid
wastes, including offal, fat, and grease, are also retained for the tallow operation. With the
expanded operations, the tallow operation will collect these wastes on a daily basis.
