unprotected personnel at all times while operating the equipment. Other personnel must
be aware of equipment movement and exercise proper caution to avoid placing
themselves in an unsafe situation.
Employees are to follow appropriate safety regulations to protect themselves and others
while working with or on all equipment. All equipment, machinery, and tools to be used
by any personnel shall be in good condition. All equipment, machinery, and tools shall
be operated only by qualified employees according to the manufacture's instructions or
by accepted industry standards.
ELECTRICAL AND POWERED EQUIPMENT
Service and maintenance of electrical and other powered equipment creates the potential
for injury from electrical shock, entanglement in mechanical equipment, etc. Due to this
potential it is essential that personnel exercise proper caution and utilize established
safety procedures when performing work on or near such equipment.
Prior to the start of work the appropriate Facility Safety Officer and supervisors should be
notified of intended procedures. Planned work will be briefed during daily safety
meetings ("tailgate safety meeting"). Under no circumstance will any Allwaste
Transportation& Remediation, Inc. employee enter any areas within the site without
obtaining clearance from the customers representative. All power sources must be
disconnected prior to start of work, and control switches placed in and locked in the"off'
position. Mechanical equipment must be secured by blocking, tie-down, support stands,
etc. prior to being worked on.
NOISE EXPOSURE
Working on and around large equipment often creates excessive noise. The effects of
noise can include physical damage to the ear, pain, and temporary and/or permanent
hearing loss. Workers should be aware that there are sources that can result in sudden
and loud noise, which can startle, annoy, or distract them during critical activities. The
site representative will identify these sources.
Noise monitoring is not generally conducted during normal operations to monitor
employee exposure to hazardous noise. However, for the purposes of this health and
safety plan, hearing protection will be worn at all times when normal conversation
becomes difficult at distances of three feet or less.
HEAT STRESS
Heat stress may occur due to prolonged working under hot weather conditions, poor
ventilation, and extensive work hours without adequate resting periods and replacement
of water and salt. Different types and levels of heat stress are listed below:
