MONITORING AND REPORTING PROGRAM NO. R5-2005-0827
I reviewed the 16 August 2007 Quarterly Report— Second Quarter 2007 (Report) submitted on
your behalf by Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) to the Regional Water Quality Control
Board — Central Valley Region (Regional Board). Forty-eight (48) groundwater monitoring
(screened from 40 to 245 feet below ground surface or bgs), four air sparging, and one vapor
extraction wells were sampled in May 2007. Maximum groundwater constituent
concentrations were Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg), 25,000 micrograms
per Liter (ug/L); TPH as diesel (TPHd), 18,000 ug/L; benzene, 56 ug/L; toluene, 54 ug/L;
ethylbenzene, 2,000 ug/L; xylenes, 7,700 ug/L; ethylene dibromide, 200 ug/L; and
1,2-dichloroethane, 250 ug/L. Depth to water varied from 42 to 44 feet bgs. A Soil Vapor
Extraction (SVE) treatment.system has operated at the Site since November 2004. The
Report states SVE did remove approximately 100 gallons of TPHg during the second quarter
of 2007, has removed approximately 3,500 total gallons of TPHg since 2004, and provides a
graphic representation of declining SVE influent concentrations in Appendix G. An Air
Sparging system was added in April 2007 as a pilot study, to reduce dissolved constituent
concentrations in groundwater. The Report concludes that constituent concentrations are
declining.
The Report recommends reductions in the analytical suite for monitoring wells where analytical
results have been consistently non-detect for specific constituents, and the continued
operation of the SVE/AS system.
Comments:
i. The Report shows that the analytical list for several wells was reduced, such that
groundwater constituents detected in the previous two quarters were not reported in this
latest quarter. For example, analyses of groundwater from vapor extraction well
VW-14B reported the fuel oxygenate tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME) during the
previous two quarters (190 ug/L and 220 ug/L, respectively), however this quarter none
of the fuel oxygenates were reported for that well. Similarly for monitoring well MW-3,
TPHg, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and TAME were detected in the
previous one to two quarters, but were not reported this quarter. Therefore, those
constituents with any detection within the last 4 consecutive quarters of sampling must
continue to be sampled and reported. If no detections have occurred within the last
4 consecutive quarters, then you may reduce the list of analytes per well to those
