R5-2005-0827
I reviewed the 16 January 2007 Air Sparging Feasibility Study Work Plan (Workplan)
submitted on your behalf by Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) to the Regional Water
Quality Control Board — Central Valley Region (Regional Board). The Workplan proposes a
24-week in-situ air sparging (AS) pilot study (Figures 2 and 3), consisting of four AS wells
screened in or near a coarser-grained sand/gravel unit at 70 to 75 ft feet below ground surface
(ft bgs). The AS wells will be located within the footprint of the former River City Petroleum
Underground Storage Tanks dispenser area; and are surrounded by existing soil vapor
extraction (SVE) wells screened above the water table. Current depth to groundwater is
approximately 55 ft bgs. The direction of groundwater is towards the west. The results of the
AS pilot study, in conjunction with the monitoring of the Interim SVE system, will be used to
design a full scale remedial system for soil and groundwater for petroleum hydrocarbons,
including 1,2-dichloroethane.
The Workplan for the AS pilot study is appropriate and necessary, and is approved. Please
procure the necessary permits, and provide San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Department and myself at least three working days notice prior to starting fieldwork.
