point will retract inside the sampling tool, allowing soil to fill the acetate liner. The sampling tool
(and associated rods), will then be extracted from the borehole and the sample liner(s) with soil
will be removed for handling, labeling and temporary storage in an insulated chest filled with
water ice pending transport to a certified laboratory for analysis.
Collected soil samples will be analyzed at different depths for one or more of the following:
TPHg, in accordance with Modified EPA Method 8015 and Method 5035
preservation;
TPHd and TPHo, in accordance with Modified EPA Method 8015B;
VOCs, in accordance with EPA Method 8260B and Method 5035 preservation;
SVOCs and PAHs, in accordance with EPA Methods 8270C / 8310 respectively;
PCBs, in accordance with EPA Method 8082;
PH, in accordance with EPA Method 9040 / 9045;
Total metals, in accordance with EPA Method 7470 / 7471 (no hexavalent chrome);
and
Soluble metals, in accordance with the California Waste Extraction Test (WET), may
be performed for those samples where the total threshold limit concentration (TTLC)9
concentration exceeds 10x the soluble threshold limit concentration (STLC)I° limit.
Although six (6) soil samples will be collected at each grid sample location, only a selected
group of samples initially will be analyzed for the above PCOCs and COCs. A systematic
analytical program has been developed. As part of this program, the selected group of soil
samples to be analyzed includes the following:
Sample Depths (feet bgs) Selected for
Analysis
Constituents to be Analyzed 0.5 2 5 10 15 20
TPHg, TPHd, VOCs, SVOCs X X
TPHo X X X
pH X X
Sample analysis will focus primarily on TPH and metals. Consequently, SVOCs and PCBs
initially will be analyzed from areas of historic commercial activities. Samples selected for initial
SVOC and PCB analysis, based on historic data, include grid numbers A2, C2, C4, C6+25ft east,
D3, D8, D14, D17, D19 and E15-10ft west. In addition, selected soil samples with elevated TPH
concentrations will also be analyzed for PCBs.
9 Total Threshold Limit Concentration (regulatory limit that defines a characteristic of hazardous waste)
10 Soluble Threshold Limit Concentration (regulatory limit that defines a characteristic of hazardous waste)
Golden State Environmental, Inc. - 18 - Los Angeles, San Diego and Houston
Revised Work Plan — Soil and GW Characterization July 2006
