The plan was prepared in response to Regional Water
Board correspondence dated 6 August 2002 requiring replacement of Well MW-1 because of
physical damage to the well. After reviewing the workplan, I have the following comments:
The workplan states all the wells have incurred some damage but only Well MW-1 requires
replacement. Please include an evaluation of each of the wells as part of the scope of work. If
any of the other wells have sustained damage significant enough to affect the usefulness of the
well, a supplemental workplan shall be submitted and those well(s) shall be replaced. At a
minimum, the evaluation shall include the following:
The suitability of each well for monitoring purposes;
An evaluation of damage to the well casing, sanitary seal, or well head;
A description of any physical damage that will limit the use of the well, for example a
damaged well casing that prevents use of submersible pumps or other equipment;
An evaluation of the amount of sediment in the bottom of the well and a determination of
the possibility that the well casing has been damaged below the ground surface;
A description of any repairs that have been performed to correct damage to the well
especially repairs that resulted in a change in well casing elevations; and
Photographs of the wellhead condition.
The well survey shall include all the monitoring well locations and well casing elevations rather
than only Well MW-lr. The location of Well MW-1 shall also be surveyed.
As part of the Groundwater Monitoring Well Installation Report, measure the depth to
groundwater in all the site groundwater monitoring wells. The data shall be posted on a scale
map and groundwater elevations contoured.
California Environmental Protection Agency
Ciw Recycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real.
