Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
Obtain boring permits from San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
(SJCEHD). Obtain encroachment permit from the City of Stockton (if required) to
conduct a boring in the city right-of-way.
Make all necessary notifications and interactions with BNSF to comply with BNSF and
FRA railroad worker protection requirements.
Mark the boring locations with white paint or stakes. Underground Service Alert (USA)
will be notified of drilling at least 48 hours in advance.
In addition, the potential presence of underground utilities at the conceptual proposed
boring locations will be assessed by a private contractor using non-invasive geophysical
means as described above.
The drilling contractor will also provide an air knife device as noted above to uncover
any utilities near the borings to verify the utilities depth and orientation to a depth of
7 feet bgs.
Subcontract with a licensed drilling contractor in California.
3.5 Drilling Methods
The LIF tooling is advanced into the subsurface using a hydraulic push-drive drill rig such as a
GeoprobeTM. These rigs use vibrational and percussion energy to drive the tooling into the
subsurface at a pre-determined rate, while readings are simultaneously obtained and recorded
in the control vehicle. The tooling is advanced at a predetermined rate to allow the collector
system to acquire and record the data accurately. As stated above, 15 borings will be drilled to a
depth of approximately 50 feet bgs, approximately 5 feet below the groundwater table.
Upon completion, tooling will be removed from the borehole and tremie pipe will be inserted and
the boring will then be sealed with neat cement. Borings within the railyard will be cemented to
the ground surface. Borings in the Diamond Street parking lot and East Worth Street will be
cemented to approximately 1 foot bgs, and filled with concrete in the top 1 foot. If maintenance
of East Worth Street is under the City of Stockton, the surface completion of those borings will
conform to City of Stockton requirements.
Equipment will be cleaned between boreholes using a steam cleaner, or with non-phosphate
soap, potable water, and a distilled water final rinse.
Drilling residuals (decontamination rinsate water that is not used to mix cement, and soil
cuttings if generated) will be placed in sealed DOT-approved containers for handling and
disposal as non-hazardous waste by BNSF. While on BNSF property, the containers will be
properly labeled and placed in a secure location designated by BNSF.
High Resolution Site Characterization Work Plan,
BNSF Mormon Yard, Stockton, California Page 8
Os-group1admirAjob11311365020.01_bnsf109-reportsthrsc-wkpin1text.doc
