5.0 GENERAL HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS <br />5.1 PERSONAL HYGIENE <br />• Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking, or any practice that <br />increases the probability of hand -in -mouth transfer and ingestion of <br />material is prohibited in any area designated as being potentially <br />impacted. <br />• Hands and face must be thoroughly washed upon leaving the work area, <br />and before eating, drinking, or other non -project activities. <br />• Kneeling, sitting, leaning, or general contact with potentially impacted <br />surfaces, or with surfaces suspected of being potentially impacted by <br />hazardous materials (i.e., puddles, mud, leachate, etc.) should be avoided. <br />• Medicine and alcohol can potentiate the effects of exposure to lead. <br />Personnel should take neither if the likelihood of such potentiation exists <br />(Consult a physician). Being under the influence of alcohol during the <br />field activities is prohibited. <br />5.2 BUDDY SYSTEM <br />All field personnel while supporting the field activities are to work with another <br />person at all times. The contractor's representative can serve as the second <br />person while the work is being conducted in the field. Under no circumstances, <br />other than completion of paperwork at the end of the day, are field personnel to <br />work alone at the site while conducting field activities. <br />5.3 WORK ZONE CONTROLS <br />The following Control Zones shall be established onsite. <br />-Exclusion Zone- The zone where contaminants are known or suspected to <br />exist based on preliminary information. Relative to this site, itis defined as <br />the area in direct proximity (w/ *in 50 feet) of a UST excavation. It should be <br />clearly marked by lines, placards, hazard tape, and/or signs or enclosed by <br />physical barriers, such as chains, fences, or ropes. During site operations, the <br />boundary may be modified and adjusted as more information becomes <br />available. <br />-Contamination Reducti <br />on Zone (CRZ)- The zone between the Exclusion <br />Zone and the Support Zone that provides for the transition from the <br />presumed -contaminated and the clean areas.
