Swale, and 10 samples from two unprotected swales, for a grand total of 100 0.1 -square -
meter plots during each sampling period, as described above for vernal pools.
Marsh. Vegetation monitoring shall take place in the following marshes:
o all created marshes (Marshes 53-56), and
o selected protected marshes (Marshes KK, MM, NN).
All affected marshes will be filled during the initial construction activities and, therefore,
will not be sampled for comparison. The locations of the created and protected marshes
are shown in Figure 6; the location of the marshes to be filled are shown in Figure 2.
Ten samples will be taken from four created marshes and 10 samples from three
protected marshes for a grand total of 70 1.0 -square -meter square plots during each
sampling period. Sampling should be conducted during the flowering season of the
dominant marsh species (summer). Timing of the quantitative sampling should be
determined during spring surveys for the vernal pools and swales, based on water levels and
climatic conditions (i.e., drought). Species composition and percentage of total cover by
each species shall be recorded in 10 randomly located 1.0 -square -meter square sample plots
at or near the bottom of each marsh and 10 randomly located 1.0 -square -meter square
sample plots at the margin of each marsh. (The plot size can be modified depending on the
conditions of the vegetation; however, plot size and number should be consistent from year
to year for statistical validity.) All other sampling methods shall be as described above for
vernal pools.
Grassland. Vegetation monitoring shall take place in the following grassland areas:
o created grassland (Mitigation Sites C, D),
o protected grassland (Mitigation Site A), and
o unprotected grassland (southwestern and southeastern portions of the landfill).
The locations of the created and protected grasslands are shown in Figure 6; the location
of the grassland to be filled is shown in Figure 2. This list of monitoring sites is subject to
change so that specific, unforeseen monitoring needs and opportunities may be incorporated
into the monitoring design.
Data on species composition and cover shall be collected in those sites identified
above once each year (April to early May) during the flowering period of the dominant
grassland vegetation in the same manner as described for vernal pools. A total of 10
samples will be taken from four created grassland sites and 10 samples from five protected
grassland sites for a grand total of 90 0.1 -square -meter plots each sampling period.
55
