Mr. Michael Kalish - 2 - 13 December 2000
6. Turbidity in well G-5 was elevated (28.8 NTU)with respect to the other monitoring wells.
This may be due to insufficient development of the well. Make sure well is purged properly
before samples are taken.
7. Specific Conductance (field) of VZ-5B was 1313 µmhos (83.8 degrees). Too little water was
collected in any of the lysimeters to send to the laboratory. The lysimeters are not holding
vacuum well. Vacuum pressure was lost completely during the tests of VZ-lA, VZ-3B, and
VZ-413. Vacuum pressure may need to be reapplied during sampling and/or sampling
durations may need to be increased. Unsaturated zone monitoring equipment and sampling
techniques should be evaluated and improved in order to yield samples. An evaluation of the
unsaturated zone monitoring program should be submitted to the Regional Board no later
than 31 January 2001. The evaluation may be submitted with the Fourth Quarter and Annual
,Report for 2000.
The Monitoring Report Compliance Checklist for the review of the Third Quarter 2000 report is
attached. If you have any questions or comments regarding our review, please call me at(916)255-
3137.
)
WEND ARANO
Associate Engineering Geologist
cc.: Mr. Steven Mindt, Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division
Attachment
