E3
11
Natalia Subbotnikova [EH]
From: Michael Carroll [mcarroll@sjgov.org]
Sent: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 10:48 AM
To: Robert McClellon [EH]
Cc: Natalia Subbotnikova [EH]; gyekta@ciwmb.ca.gov; Joyesh Chandra
Subject: RE: Design of LFG migration Monitoring Wells, Foothill and North County Landfills
Good morning Robert,
Thanks for forwarding Gino's email to us. We have incorporated these comments into the final design, and I
thought it a good idea to "close the loop" on these items via email. Both you and Gino have been sent a copy of
our as -bid drawings.
1. The elevation of the final refuse will be monitored by a slotted probe section. With the exception of the 5 -ft
bentonite intervals and the 1.5 ft concrete at the top of the well, the soil is continuously monitored from the
bottom of the well to the ground surface, so these wells will also monitor potential subsurface migration under
all conditions prior to closure.
2. The well design was adjusted to provide a minimum five feet of bentonite above the screened section of the
shallow probe.
3. The depth to the tip of the deep probe is explicitly identified on the drawings. For simplicity of the drawings,
the depths to the tip of the middle and shallow probe screened section are shown as five feet above the top of
the pea gravel section, with the depth to the top of pea gravel identified explicitly. However, our as -built
documentation will include actual depths to all probe tips. To ensure that there is no confusion regarding
design depths, a member of the Solid Waste staff will inspecting the well construction full time.
Presently, we plan to start drilling on Tuesday September 2nd at the North County Landfill. Bids open in two days,
and we don't anticipate any delays, but we will update you if the date changes.
I hope addressed these items to your and Gino's satisfaction, but if not, please let us know.
Best regards,
Mike Carroll
W.
