Removal, Handling, and Disposal of ltion/Precautions Linen and Trash <br />Procedure: 0 <br />EVS personnel will pick up isolation/precautions linen and medical (infectious) waste from <br />patient rooms that are in isolation or precautions. This should be once every eight hour <br />shift as follows: <br />Day Shift — Routinely collected as needed starting around 10:00am. <br />PM Shift — Checked and picked up as needed starting around 8:45pm. <br />Night Shift — On call basis as needed. <br />1. Equipment and Supplies Needed: <br />a. Isolation gowns <br />b. Disposable gloves <br />c. Infectious soiled linen liners (yellow with red printing) <br />d. Red medical (infectious) waste tipper cart lined with autoclaveable liner <br />e. Grey infectious linen tipper cart — must be labeled for infectious linen <br />2. Put isolation gown on in basement, making sure gown is overlapped in the back and that <br />A clothing is protected. <br />a. Start on 4th floor and proceed to each lower floor until all patient floors are <br />covered. <br />3. Take tipper carts and liners to each isolation/precautions room. <br />4. Determine course of action by referring to the following: <br />a. Precautions: <br />1.) This includes Enteric Precautions, Drainage/Secretion Precautions, <br />Blood/Body Fluid Precautions <br />2.) Note that the outside of bag is not considered contaminated and therefore, <br />the following steps can be accomplished by one EVS personnel. <br />a.) Tie off medical (infectious) waste trash bags and place into the red <br />medical (infectious) waste tipper cart lined with an autoclaveable liner. <br />b.) Tie off the infectious soiled linen liner and place into the grey isolation <br />linen tipper cart. <br />b. Isolations: <br />1.) This includes Strict (MRSA/VRE), Contact Respiratory, A.F.B. <br />2.) Note that the outside of bag is considered contaminated so it will take two <br />individuals, one to enter the room and one outside with cart to collect medical <br />(infectious) waste and isolation linen. <br />Shift 1 — Each EVS personnel assigned in an area will assist the EVS <br />personnel with the tipper carts. <br />Shift 2 & 3 — Nursing Staff will continue to be asked to enter and <br />assist the EVS personnel with the tipper carts. <br />a.) The EVS personnel/Nursing Staff will put on protective equipment as <br />indicated on the door sign prior to entering the room. <br />b.) Gloves are worn and changed between each patient room. Gloves are <br />removed and hands washed at completion of task or prior to leaving the <br />floor. <br />c.)
