Indications for Pathology: <br />If processing instructions are received from the physician (Section C) further <br />is examination of the specimen should be initiated at this time. <br />A. Accession the specimen per standard procedure <br />B. Notify the Pathologist <br />IV. Infection Control/ Specimen Disposal: <br />• <br />Rotate and save placenta's for ninety-six (96) hours (fourth day after <br />receipt). If no further instructions are received from the submitting <br />physician proceed with disposal. <br />A. Record date of disposal on the "Placenta Examination Form1°. <br />B. Retain placenta records according to the retention guidelines of three <br />(3) years. <br />C. Disposed of placentas in the red biohazard barrels, located in the <br />caged area of the Engineering Department. Contact the Environmental <br />Services Department for admittance. <br />D. Line the red biohazard barrel with a red biohazard bag. Red <br />biohazard bags can be obtained from the Environmental Services <br />Department. Do not overfill containers. Tie the red biohazard bag closed <br />using a single knot. <br />E. Accumulated placentas will be disposed of by means of incineration <br />destruction and will be removed from hospital premises on a <br />predetermined schedule by a contracted service. Only barreled items will <br />be transported for disposal. <br />F. At time of pickup, an Environmental Services Department <br />representative will sign and obtain a copy of the "Hazardous Waste <br />Hauling Record and Certificate of Destruction."
