The master key can be removed now
from the "Sharps" lock.
2. Biological testing with Geobacillus (Bacillus) stearothermophilus will be done at least monthly.
Place the indicator in the middle of the medical waste load. Follow the standard operating
procedure to process the indicator. The results will be recorded and kept a minimum of
three years. In the case of a positive result (growth), stop operation at this point and notify
the EVS Director, Nurse Epidemiologist or Safety Officer. Contact Plant
Operations /Engineering if an equipment malfunction is suspected. Indicate on the San -I -
Pak Inspection Log what appropriate measures are being taken to correct the problem.
Then take those corrective measures before operation is resumed. A successful completion
(no growth) of three (3) sterilized indicators in three (3) consecutive cycles must be
accomplished before operation can continue.
Procedure:
1. Unlock sterilizer door by turning hatch wheel to left until the locking bars release.
Pull the door away from the unit until it reaches the end of ies track.
2. On computer pad press "Send to Discharge" then press "OK". Sterilizer chamber
will move to the discharge area, dump load, and return home.
CAUTION: Keep hands and body completely away from the moving sterilizer chamber.
Do not, under any circumstances, touch or try to obstruct the moving chamber.
3. To load the chamber — on the computer pad press "Send to Discharge" then press
"OK". Chamber will move to the discharge area and wait.
4. To tip the chamber up, press "Chamber Load" button (yellow one).
5. Open discharge area doors (big blue ones — both of them).
6. Bring red tipper cart to compactor and lay the lid completely open against the back of
the cart. Prepare autoclave bag by tying all corners — no openings are allowed. Place
autoclave tape across the top of the autoclave bag. Note: no sharps containers are to be
placed into the sterilizer after 24:00(midnight) the night before the compactor bin is
scheduled for pickup. Other medical (infectious) waste can still be sterilized and
regular waste can still be compacted.
7. Position the tipper in front of the cart lift — front of tipper cart will face the cart lift.
Continuously press the "Cart Lift" button (black one). The cart lift will catch the upper
part of the tipper cart, lift and dump it into the discharge area. To lower the tipper cart -
continuously press the "Cart Lower" button (black one). Lower the tipper cart and move it
out of the way. With the tamping pole, push the bag into the bottom of the chamber.
8. If the chamber is only half filled or less, position a second tipper cart in front of the cart
lift and repeat #7.
9. Close the discharge area doors (big blue ones).
10. Straighten the chamber by pressing the "Chamber Dump" button (yellow one).
11. Open the discharge area doors. Use the tamping pole to push back any bags that have
fallen forward. ALL OF THE BAGS MUST BE PUSHED SAFELY INTO THE
CHAMBER BEFORE PROCEEDING.
12. Close the discharge area doors. On the computer pad press the "Send Home" button.
As the chamber moves to the "home position", watch for any signs that the load may have
shifted forward.
