There are a total of 36 toilets and 13 urinals listed on the fixture count document:
Wastewater volume and usage calculations:
Volume:
36 toilets x 2 flushes/toilet/hr x 20 hrs/work day x 2 gals/flush (incl.hand washing)=2,880 gpd
13 urinals x 4 flushes/urinal/hr x 20 hrs/work day x 1.5 gals/flush(incl.hand washing)= 1,560 gpd
2,880+ 1,560=4,440 gpd=Average Daily Flow(ADF)
4,440 gpd x 6 work days/wk x 50 work wks/yr= 1,332,000 gals/yr
1,332,000 gals/yr_365 d/yr=3,649 gals effluent generated on average, every day of the year.
Usage:
4,440 gpd_500 employees=8.9 gals/emp/day
Wastewater Characteristics
The domestic wastewater generated from the facility will be composed of blackwater from toilets
and greywater from hand washing. There will be no high organic loading from wine waste, break
room use, etc. Additional wastewater constituents may consist of other liquids to the system, such
as coffee, juices, low-strength cleaning liquids, etc. any food waste products must be handled as
solid wastes.
No wastewater generated from the on-site winery laboratory is introduced into the OWTS. Any
laboratory waste is classified as winery waste and managed under the aforementioned Waste
Discharge Requirements (WDRs). It is imperative that low strength and low volumes of cleaners
are used in the restrooms since they can disrupt septic tank biology.
To utilize accurate nitrogen concentrations in the nitrate loading'calculations, a septic tank effluent
sample was retrieved from the second compartment of the 2,000 gallon tank which serves the
Administration Building. The test results are summarized below in Table 5 and found in Appendix F.
TABLE 5
ADMINISTRATION BUILDING SEPTIC TANK EFFLUENT SAMPLING'
TEST RESULTS
SAMPLE BIOCHEMICAL TOTAL TOTAL AMMONIA ORGANIC TOTAL pH .t
ID OXYGEN SUSPENDED KJELDAHL NITROGEN NITROGEN ALKALINITY
DEMAND SOLIDS NITROGEN NH, (Calc.)
(BOD,) (TSS) (TKN)
Admin 250 mg/I. 100 mg/1' 176 mg/I, 119 mg/L 57 mg/l. 522 mg/L 7.0
S.T.
The TKN value will be used in the nitrate loading calculations below. Typically, organic nitrogen
concentrations in septic tank effluent are 25%to 33%of the Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen(TKN)
concentrations, which was observed from the test results.
Page -7-
Chesney Consulting
