E
I
11
1 . Schedule: All site preparation and reseeding is to be done between October
10 and October 30, 2008, when temperatures are not expected to be above
90°F and the rainy season is not expected to be underway. Though the
erosion control layer of hydrostraw will reduce seed predation by birds and
small mammals some will still find and eat some seed before it germinates.
Because we rely on natural rainfall to germinate the seeds, waiting until October
shortens the length of time between application and germination. This schedule
will reduce the number of seeds eaten.
2. Site preparation:
a) Mow the existing vegetation on the site reducing the stubble to a minimum
height of six inches with a maximum height of 10 inches.
b) Leave the clippings where they fall.
c) A flail mower should be used rather than a rotary mower, but this is not
required. The flail mower breaks the clippings into smaller pieces, which
decompose faster adding to the organic components of the soil.
d) Double -disk (2 passes on each of 2 directions cross -wise to one another)
followed by minimum 2 passes with a ring -roller (clod buster). Additional
fine grading may be necessary in order to create a smooth surface
suitable for drill seeding.
Note: if the County determines that organic compost and chemical
fertilizers should be added, then the quantities specified above shall be
spread over the planting site in two applications after the first pass with the
disc and prior to the second pass in each direction.
3.Seeding
a) Use seed mix presented above
b) Thoroughly mix the seed and any necessary filler.
c) Drill seed using a range drill specifically adapted for large, long awned
native grass seeds. Range drill shall be calibrated on site in the presence
of a County representative to demonstrate that the seed is delivered at the
specified rates.
d) Place seed between 0.5 inch and 1.25 inches deep and the soil surface
compacted lightly over the seed in the furrows.
e) Drill seed at right angles to the existing rows as much as possible where
some existing native grasses currently exist.
• Driving at right angles to existing rows will prevent long swaths of
overlap. This minimizes damage to existing plants and minimizes
competition between new seed and existing plants.
• Driving at right angles to existing rows may inoculate some existing
grasses without causing significant damage to the row as a whole.
Reseeding ET Cap 2 Kleinfelder, Inc
Foothill Landfill July 14, 2008
