LFG can move through soils, especially sand layers or along landfill liners such
as exist at the site. Movement through soils can remove the odorous compounds
of LFG, such that LFG can be detected only with electronic instruments.
The Contractor shall verify that trenches that workers enter meet OSHA
requirements for oxygen and combustible gas using portable electronic devices
designed for that purpose. The Contractor shall demonstrate that this equipment
is functional, prior to the monitoring of the trenches.
Contractor shall not perform work that involves heat sources, such as welding, or
any other work that includes temperatures that could ignite methane, in areas
containing leachate or landfill gas unless the safety of the area has been verified
by the Contractor.
4.
