I
Therefore, the wastewater alone supplies almost a sufficient alkalinity concentration for
nitrification of the effluent. From the soil tests, nitrification appears to be inhibited at the deeper
depths that may be attributable to the alkaline soil pH.
E. SURFACE WATER INFORMATION AND CALCULATIONS
NLS§ 3.2. The rainfall recharge factor used in the Hantzsche-Finnemore equation below will be
based upon water balance documentation from Norman Hantzsche found in Appendix E, which
pertains to the entire Stockton and outlying areas.
III. NITRATE LOADING STUDY FINDINGS
A. WASTEWATER FLOW VOLUME PROJECTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
Wastewater Flow Volume Projections
To determine nitrate-nitrogen loading from any project, wastewater flow volumes must be
determined as accurately as possible. The maximum number of onsite people who can occupy the
facility after completion of the proposed addition, is 37. The EHD has specified 60
gals/person/day from the Water Use Computation Factor Table and from personal communication.
Consequently, the Average Daily Flow is: 37 x 60 = 2,220 gallons per day (gpd). This value is
discussed in further detail in the Conclusions and Recommendations Section of this Report.
Wastewater Characteristics
The domestic wastewater generated from the Facility will be composed of blackwater from toilets
and greywater from showers, laundry, hygiene, food prep, etc. .
To utilize accurate nitrogen concentrations in the nitrate loading calculations, a septic tank effluent
sample was retrieved from the second compartment of the 3,600 gallon tank which serves the HOP
facility. The test results are summarized below in Table 5 and found in Appendix F.
TABLE 3
HOP FACILITY SEPTIC TANK EFFLUENT SAMPLING TEST RESULTS
SAMPLE
ID
BIOCHEMICAL
OXYGEN
DEMAND
(BODO
TOTAL
SUSPENDED
SOLIDS
(TSS)
TOTAL
KJELDAHL
NITROGEN
(TKN)
AMMONIA
NITROGEN
NH4
ORGANIC
NITROGEN
(Cale.)
TOTAL
ALKALINITY
pH
7070
Harlan
Rd.
300 mg/L 250 mg/I. 67.4 mg/I. 44.5 mg/I. 22.9 mg/L 472 mg/I. 6.94
Typically, organic nitrogen concentrations in septic tank effluent are 25% to 33% of the Total
Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) concentrations, which was observed from the test results. The TKN value
of 67.4 mg/L will be used in the nitrate loading calculations below.
Page -5-
Chesney Consulting
