Work Practices Sufficient Amounts of Drinking Water • Drinking water in the quantity of 1 quart per hour shall be available at all times for each employee for the duration of the entire shift while working outdoors in the heat. • Supervisors shall remind employees to drink frequently and this topic will be addressed at tailgate meetings . • Supervisor/designated person will monitor water containers every 30 minutes , and employees are encouraged to report to supervisor/designated person low levels or dirty water. • All water containers will be placed as close as possible to workers . • When drinking water levels within the container drop below 50 % , the water shall be replenished immediately; or water levels should not fall below the point that will allow for adequate water during the time necessary to replenish it . • Disposable , single use drinking cups will be provided to employees . • Noise making devices , such as air horns may be used to remind employee's to take their water break. • Water must be "fresh , pure , and suitably cool" and located as close as practicable to where employees are working , with exceptions when employers can demonstrate infeasibility. Shade and Other Coolinq Measures • Employees shall have access to a shaded area to take their breaks , and to recover from heat illness symptoms if they appear. Shade is adequate only when it completely blocks the direct sunlight and allows the body to cool.
