SHIELDS AVENUE
FRESNO, CA 95727
(209) 415-5321 40
Y
December 5, 1984N J q 141984
EQ4TypD TR00,gL,
Mr. L. A. Moldenhauer
Moldenhauer Engineering Company
1111 Kennedy Place, Suite 1
Davis, CA 95616
L
Dear Mr. Moldenhauer:
Santos Ranch Rural Subdivision
Tracy Area — San Joaquin County
We have received your report entitled, "Santos Ranch Area — Ground Water
Study, 20 August 1984", and have reviewed its content. We share your concerns
that the local ground water used for domestic water supply purposes appears to
exceed both Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Standards and may at times be
exposed to biological contaminants of sewage origin, especially during wet
weather — high ground water conditions.
Until this problem is more adequately documented, it would appear prudent for
the consumers of such waters to initiate appropriate public health
safeguards.
1. Where the water exceeds 45 ppm of nitrate, bottled water should be used
for ingestion purposes for all infants less thin 6 months of age.. Bottled
water should also pe used by pregnant women for precautionary purposes.
2. Where the water is high in TDS, sodium and chloride or where the water is
Softened, bottled water (low in sodium) should be used by persofts on
doctor recommended low sodium diets.
3. If sewage contamination hazards are felt to exist, one would normally
prescribe chlorination treatment or the boiling of water for 5-10 minutes
as interim public health safeguards. Such chlorination treatment appears
technically feasible for community water systems, such as the school and
for the Currier Estates community water system. Chlorination of
individual wells is not technically feasible. Boiling the water does not
seem the thing to do as such boiling would only further increase the
nitrate and salt contents of the water both of which are already elevated.
Therefore, private well owners could mitigate any perceived biological
hazard to their wells by using bottled water for all ingestion purposes.
