Called UPRR dispatch (888-877-7267)
and was placed on hold for about 10 minutes until I finally was transferred to Mike
Algots the UPRR Hazmat Manager. Mike Algots provided a waybill showing the
leaked shipping container contained various corrosives such as sodium hydroxide,
acetic acid, ammonia solutions, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and
sodium hyudroxide solution, as well as flammable printing ink. Mike did not
immediately know what material leaked from the container. Mike provided the
contact information for Derek Smith of Patriot Environmental Services, who would
be performing the clean up and is en route to the site with an ETA of 9:30pm, for
Jeryll Womack of UPS Freight/TForce Freight - responsible party, and for UPS's
broker, HazMat One. Sent Derek a text message requesting he provide before
and after photos of the clean up and waste generated, what material spilled, when
he will be done with clean up, how much waste was generated, if waste will remain
on-site or when it will be transported, is waste hazardous or non-hazardous, and a
photo of the waste disposal record/manifest. Received a call from Derek stating he
just arrived on-site and he will provide me an update once he opens the container
and looks at the spill.
9:48 pm - 9:52 pm - Received a call from Derek who states he needs to obtain
more equipment, including a PID meter, before he begins the cleanup, he will
begin the cleanup tomorrow morning, and he will provide an update on the clean
up tomorrow. Derek provided photos of the outside and inside of the container
before he conducted the clean-up. The photos showed a light colored liquid, that
appeared to be dry, could be seen on the back side of the container, as well as the
inside of the container, in the photos.
11/03/2021 Updated Elena Manzo, Ld Sr REHS, on the spill.
