SPCC TRAINING OUTLINE - SPILL RESPONSE
How to Prevent and Prepare for a Spill
• Evaluate the most likely spill direction and pathway for each piece of equipment/activity
that could cause a spill.
• Locate drain inlets and water courses that could be affected.
• Identify where each spill kit and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is
located.
Defining Spills
• The Facility Manager should be contacted for any spill.
• A minor spill is defined as follows:
- Has not impacted soil or a water course or crossed property line.
- Can be cleaned up using the contents of a spill kit.
• A large spill meets any one of the following requirements:
- CAN'T be cleaned up using the contents in a spill kit.
- Has entered soil or has impacted a water course (sewer, stream, water body, etc.)
- Has progressed beyond the property line.
What to Do if a Spill Occurs
• Secure the area where the spill has occurred to protect spill pathways and health and
safety of employees and neighbors.
• Notify Facility Manager or surrogate to direct response and initiate necessary notifications.
• Limit response to spills where the material hazards are well known.
• Determine if spill is minor or large.
• Determine if the area is safe.
• If it it is safe, use spill control materials to:
Large spills-Contain/control large spills. Limit efforts to defensive measures only.
Small spills - Clean up small spills
• If the spill is determined to be large:
- Clean up should be attempted only by those who have been completed the
appropriate first responder training.
-- If spill size or hazards could exceed training and/or the resources available, do not
hesitate to call for additional resources (e.g. fire agency and/or pre-contracted
professional clean up company).
Waste generated from spial should be disposed of properly. Contact the Facility
Manager for assistance with waste disposal, Obtain/retain copies of waste manifests.
1 of 1
