SUBJECT PAGE
Stockton Hazardous Work Policy lof 15
► Effective Date; 08-09-2010
APPROVED VIA
PCN: REVISIONDATED
and 002 2/3/2016
Procedures
Hazardous Work
It is the policy of the GAF Corporation that every employee be entitled to a reasonably safe and healthful
work environment. The company has developed a standard Hazardous Work procedure to assure
employees that when any work is to be done in which any HTF, asphalt, compound, natural gas, or other
hazardous material source piping or tank system is to be opened, a permit is obtained to proceed with
such work while observing all required safety practices.
I. INTRODUCTION
A. This policy outlines the hazardous work program (consisting of policies and procedures)
for the prevention of injuries and foes related to work on equipment containing materials
at elevated temperature and/or fire fuel sources and/or hazardous materials. The intent is
to prevent the potential exposure injury to hot/hazardous materials and to reduce risk of
fires or injuries caused by this work occurring in areas or under conditions, which may be
inappropriate.
B. A valid hazardous work permit is required to authorize employees to perform work, which
involves the opening and/or penetration of piping, valves, or process equipment, which
contains potentially hazardous material. This includes but is not limited to repacking of
leaking valves in HTF, asphalt, compound, and similar systems of hot material, hazardous
materials or fire fuel source materials. Potential hazardous work environments and
conditions are: exposure to elevated temperature materials, the accumulation of hazardous
or flammable gases, mist, fumes, vapors, liquids, or dust. The hazardous work permit must
be used in conjunction with a hot work permit any time qualified hot work is completed
on a process system covered under the Hazardous Work Program.
C. The issuing and approval of a Hazardous Work Permit applies to both employees and/or
contractors. (Contractor procedures are outlined in Section VIII).
D. In general, a hazardous work permit is required any time that employees or contractors are
working on asphalt based material systems,HTF systems or natural gas (or other fuel-
based) systems where the employee or contractor has the potential to be exposed to
significant hazards. Hazardous Work Pen-nits are typically required whenever a closed
loop piping system is to be opened and employees are at risk for exposure. The Hazardous
Work Permit is designed to identify potential hazards, eliminate/minimize the risk to
workers and to acquire appropriate approval from supervision and/or management.
