<br />Former Pilkington North America Site 5 Health and Safety Plan <br /> EKI B90047.00 <br /> Rail Spur Ramp: A former rail spur ramp located southeast of the main building was <br />partially bulldozed and its steel and concrete retaining wall was removed. There is glass <br />cullet, soil, and cement associated with this structure. The area was discussed in a Site <br />meeting with RWQCB representatives and EKI on 30 April 2019. Collection of a composite <br />soil sample consisting of glass, soil, and cement was agreed to at that meeting. The sample <br />will be analyzed for the list requested by the RWQCB in an email dated 6 May 2019. <br /> Pile of Glass Material and Soil Slurry in Field: There is an area of glass material and soil <br />slurry on the east side of field to east of the main building. This area was discussed in a <br />Site meeting with RWQCB representatives and EKI on 30 April 2019. Collection of a glass <br />sample was agreed to at that meeting. The sample will be analyzed for the list requested <br />by the RWQCB in an email dated 6 May 2019. <br />2.3 Proposed Field Activities <br />Planned field activities for the Site may include the following: <br /> <br /> Utility clearance; <br /> Excavation of soil; <br /> Collection of soil and groundwater samples, submittal to analytical laboratory for <br />chemical analyses; <br /> Management of the temporary on‐Site storage of excavated soil and <br />decontamination/purge water generated during subsurface activities; and <br /> Packaging, preserving, and transporting samples for submittal to the analytical <br />laboratory. <br />3. POTENTIAL PHYSICAL HAZARDS <br />Potential physical hazards associated with the planned sampling activities are discussed below. <br />3.1 Operating Equipment <br />Field personnel should be aware of potential physical hazards associated with use of heavy <br />equipment, excavators, backhoes, trucks, and electrical equipment during field operations. <br />Appropriate precautions include the following: <br /> <br /> Hard‐hats, safety glasses, and steel‐toe boots will be worn. <br /> Heavy work gloves will be worn when handling heavy equipment. <br /> Chemical resistant gloves will be worn when handling soil and groundwater samples. <br /> On‐Site personnel who operate or are within 10 feet of operating gasoline or diesel <br />powered equipment will wear approved hearing protection to limit exposure to noise. <br /> High visibility safety vests will be worn when working in areas where heavy equipment is <br />operating. <br /> Personnel who operate machinery or are within 10 feet of operating gasoline or diesel <br />powered equipment will wear approved hearing protection.
