Former Pilkington North America Site 6 Health and Safety Plan
EKI B90047.00
A first aid kit and cellular phone will be made available at the EKI job Site.
Hearing protection such as earplugs or earmuffs when excessive noise is encountered. If
back‐up alarms cannot be heard while using hearing protection, a spotter will be
designated.

Potential physical hazards associated with excavation machinery include:

Noise;
Moving parts of the equipment which may catch clothing or hair;
High‐pressure hydraulic lines that may rupture;
Underground utilities and pipelines which can be breached or damaged;
Lifting or moving heavy items such as buckets, or drums;
Injury due to falling or tripping; and
Moving heavy equipment over uneven terrain which may cause the vehicle to become
unstable and roll or become stuck.

Personnel will be made aware of this equipment and the hazards of working around such
equipment. Contractors will be required to demonstrate that “kill switches” on their drilling rigs
or other powered heavy equipment is accessible and functions properly. All personnel operating
such equipment will be made aware of the presence of other site personnel. Whenever
appropriate, warning devices (e.g., cones, caution tape) will be placed to alert site personnel to
the location of specific hazards or to areas where personnel should use special caution.

The hazards related to the use of the specific heavy equipment during on‐Site activities will be
reviewed during the health and safety meeting to be held at the start of the field activities.

In accordance with OSHA’s Crystalline Silica Rule (29 CFR 1926.1153), the area in the vicinity of
any material that contains or may contain silica (e.g., concrete, stone, brick, and mortar) that is
cut with an impact or a rotary hammer drill must be cleaned up using a HEPA‐filtered vacuum or
other methods that minimize exposure to silica. Dry sweeping or dry brushing is not allowed.
3.2 Noise
Work around heavy equipment always includes the possibility of excessive noise. Where
excessive noise may be encountered, employees will be provided with hearing protection such
as earplugs or earmuffs. Excessive noise can be readily indicated to the workers on‐Site by
difficulty in hearing verbal communication at approximately an arm’s length away. If such
conditions exist, hearing protection will be instituted as appropriate (see also the EKI CHSP).

3.3 Vehicular Traffic
Vehicular traffic is of concern to field personnel when conducting work in or along the street or
other traffic corridors such as driveways in parking lots. Vehicular traffic at the work site is
