Site Preparation <br /> 1 . All trees, brush, logs and other debris shall be removed from <br /> the area to be filled. The area to receive fill shall be free <br /> of all roots and other organic material. Underground structures <br /> shall be removed, or may be crushed in place upon approval of <br /> the Soils Engineer. Unsuitable soil shall be removed from the <br /> fill foundation, exposing firm foundation material capable of <br /> achieving specified compaction. For fills to be placed on <br /> sloping surfaces, adequate fill foundation shall be exposed <br /> to the toe of fill slope extended to foundation level, unless <br /> otherwise specified or permitted by the Soils Engineer. <br /> 2. The exposed fill foundation shall be scarified to a depth of <br /> at least six (6) inches. Where fills are to be placed on <br /> hillslopes, scarifying shall be to depths adequate to provide <br /> bond between fill and fill foundation. Where considered <br /> necessary by the Soils Engineer, the ground surface shall be <br /> stepped or benched to achieve this bond. Vertical dimension <br /> of the required benches shall be as determined by the Soils <br /> Engineer, based upon location, degree and condition of hillslope. <br /> 3. The exposed and scarified fill foundation shall be watered as <br /> necessary and compacted to not less than 90% of maximum dry <br /> density achieved by ASTM D 1557 unless otherwise specified. <br /> B. Fill Material <br /> 1 . materials for the fill shall consist of material approved by <br /> the Soils Engineer. Such materials shall be free from vege- <br /> table matter and other deleterious substances and shall not <br /> contain rocks or lumps greater than 4-inches dimension. <br /> 12/15/70 Page 1 of 2 pages <br />
