Pneumercator Non - Discriminating
Liquid Float-Switch Sensors
SECTION 1 . BACKGROUND
The federal Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA) has provided a series of
documents that describe the procedures that are to be used to verify that leak detection
equipment meets the performance requirements of the Federal Register . The
requirements for evaluating liquid float-switch sensors were not, however, included in
those documents . It has therefore been necessary to develop independent methods for
evaluating the performance of these systems . The objective is , of course , to provide an
evaluation procedure that will provide testing that is at least as rigorous as those
described for other types of leak detectors . At a minimum the evaluation method must
determine the minimum liquid threshold for which a liquid float-switch sensor will alarm .
To achieve this objective , the applicable sections of standard EPA protocols have
been adapted to the specialized requirements of liquid float-switch sensors . The test
procedures generally follow the procedures described in the protocol for external liquid
monitors (" Standard Test Procedures for Evaluating Leak Detection Methods : Liquid -
Phase Out-of4ank Product Detectors" , March 1990 . Since the statistical methods for
analyzing the data from qualitative monitors are not provided in the external liquid
monitor document , the analysis of the data was conducted similarly to that described for
non -volumetric test methods (" Standard Test Procedures for Evaluating Leak Detection
Methods : Non -volumetric Tank Tightness Testing Methods" , March 1990 ) .
Since none of the forms provided in either document are suitable for reporting the
results of liquid float-switch sensors , the forms for the liquid - phase out-oftank product
detector were modified to fit the test results . The modified forms are contained in
Attachment A of this report . The modified test procedures used are contained in
Attachment B .
