Field Sampling
Per the Site Investigation Work Plan (Appendix A), discrete samples were collected during
and/or following completion of excavating activities at each trench location. The samples were
collected using the authoritative sampling protocol that allowed for flexibility to accommodate
unforeseen conditions. The sampling was conducted over a 4 -day period, 22-24 October 2002.
5.1 Sampling Locations and Procedures
Utilizing the site map provided by Ninyo and Moore, trench locations were established via the
use of global positioning system equipment on 15-16 October 2002. Also, additional trench
locations were established during the investigation based on inspection information provided by
the LEA.
Discrete samples of soil and/or bum ash were taken from each trench while on site. The depths,
from which the samples were taken, were determined base upon the conditions of the trench at
the time of excavation. Soil and waste samples were collected from trench spoils in brass
sampling sleeves, sealed with Teflon paper, capped and labeled in accordance with the
investigation work plan. The samples were packed in ice placed ice chests and were picked up by
ExcelChem Laboratory personnel at the end of each day. Chain -of -Custody forms were
completed and, signed at time of release.
During trenching operations gas screening was conducted by use of a GMI 422 Gas Surveyor,
for methane (CH4), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and carbon monoxide (CO). Samples of gas were
not taken. Gas readings did not exceed established thresholds. Additionally, random testing was
done using a Ludlum Radiation Detection Monitor. No significant radiation levels were detected
during the investigation. For Sampling Logs refer to Appendix E.
M
