STATE'bF CALI,'DRNIA—RESOURCES AGENCY RONALD REAGAN, Governor
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WATER QUALITY CONTROL BOARD-
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
3251 S STREET
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA 95816
PHONE: (916) 445-0270 28 March 1 Y
Mr. J. Don Layson
San Joaquin Local Health District
Post Office Box 2009
Stockton, California 95201
Dear Mr. Layson:
On 21 March 1972, an inspection was made of two proposed
waste disposal sites in San Joaquin County. Those on the site
tour were Mr. Layson, San Joaquin County; Mr. Frank Garavano
and Mr. Gregory Basso of Forward, Inc. ; Mr. Alvin Franks, Senior
Geologist, State Water Resources Control Board, and Mr. William
Johnson, Staff Engineer, Central Valley Regional Board.
The first site is south of Corral Hollow near the Alameda-
San Joaquin county line, some 10 miles southwesterly of Tracy.
The location, on this reconnaissance inspection, appears to have
merit as a Class I site for the following reasons:
1. It is in a structural syncline which plunges in such a
fashion that fluid movement controlled solely by bed-
ding attitudes would move away from the nearest topo-
graphic lows (stream channels) .
2. Sediments in the area consist of tightly cemented sands
of non-marine to marine origin, with probable silt and
clay intervals. Therefore the tendency of fluid to
move across bedding planes (through permeable units)
would be minimized. The tight, cemented zones would
a) tend to hold fluids at the point of deposit and,
b) force movement along bedding planes if migration
did occur.
3. The lack of vegetation other than grasses suggests
limited root-zone water.
4. The area would not degrade the esthetics because it is
located well back from the main road at Corral Hollow
and is hidden by a ridge of hills.
5. Winds across the area are fairly high in velocity and
persistence which will aid in the evaporation process.
There are some drawbacks to the site which will require
study. These include:
