Housekeeping Plan
1 GGNI&METAL Alco Iron &Metal
July 17,2020
4 NON-ACCEPTANCE POLICY IMPLMENTATION
Alco has a Non-Acceptance Policy which outlines the Prohibited Materials i.e., materials that Alco does
not accept (Attachment 1). All appliances, vehicles, batteries, and other materials will be carefully inspected for
compliance with the Non-Acceptance Policy, and Alco employees will reject all items that violate it. This section
addresses the protocols for materials that are more commonly discovered on site in violation of the Non-
Acceptance Policy. It is not meant to envision every scenario. Yard supervisors are responsible for addressing
situations as they arise.
4.1 General Procedures for Handling Material in Violation of the Non-Acceptance Policy
Perform the following tasks for any materials found in violation of Alco's Non-Acceptance Polity.
• Notify Yard Manager;
• Assess material for leaks or exposed hazardous material;
• Place the material in a secure location segregated from other materials;
• If leaking, place material in a container or other secondary containment area;
• Do not store in the vicinity of drains, sewer connections, or storm drains; and,
• Dispose properly per Facility Manager or COO.
4.2 Fuel Tanks
Fuel tanks shall only be accepted if they have been cut open and shown to be empty and clean or have
waste disposal documentation supporting that they are empty and clean. Tanks shall not be accepted if there is
any remaining fuel inside. If a tank containing fuel is discovered:
• Ensure it is not leaking and perform spill response if needed;
• Remove fuel if safe to do so;
• Move the tank to a safe area in secondary containment; and,
• Follow general procedures of waste removal.
4.3 Damaged Batteries
Damaged spent batteries shall not be accepted. "Damaged batteries" are batteries that are cracked,
broken, or missing one or more caps. Undamaged batteries are acceptable and should be stored neatly and not
piled on top of one another. Batteries stored at the facility need to be inspected regularly for signs of damage such
as broken end caps.Batteries identified as having damage will be separated and stored in a separate polyethylene
drum designated for damaged batteries and designed to prevent leaks of battery acid from reaching the ground
surface. If a damaged spent battery is found onsite:
• Place indoors in a non-reactive container, such as a polyethene bucket or drum;
• Label container with accumulation start date; and,
• Follow general procedures of waste removal.
4.4 Compressor Motors
Sealed compressor motors are visually inspected upon arrival at the facility. Compressors with oil shall
not be accepted. If a compressor with oil is discovered onsite:
• Ensure it is not leaking and perform spill response if needed;
• Separate and place in 55-gallon drum or other secure container capability of holding liquid;
• Container must be closed or under cover;
7
