Operation Test
Generally, the Regulatory Agency in whose area of jurisdiction the sewage treatment
plant is located will specify the laboratory tests the operator should make. With minor
exceptions, these tests, when required, should be performed in accordance with the
latest edition of "Standard Methods for Analysis of Water and Waste Water." The
Sludge Settling Test is an absolute necessity for control and for proper operation of the
plant. This simple thirty (30) minute settling test is designed for quick and easy
indication of the condition of the plant and where a problem may be developing. The
only equipment required is two (2) 1000 MI graduated cylinders or if these are not
available, two (2) quart cylinders or jars. A uniformly divided scale from 0 to 10 (0% to
100%) should be firmly affixed to the side of each container and coated with shellac to
prevent its being readily washed away. Label one container "Aeration Tank" or "Mixed
Liquid" and the other "Clarifier Tank" or "Effluent." To perform the test, fill one container
from the Aeration Tank and the other container from the effluent of the Final Tank. Both
jars are to set still for thirty (30) minutes, so that the results can be interpreted. This test
is a measure of the amount of activated sludge present to digest the sewage as well as
the condition of this sludge.
..............__._..............................
s
i
i
Typical Sludge Jar Test
pcsloX r;v5txriiip prelirrin trt-1-6
