Site Investigation Work Plan
Carousel Cleaners, Sacramento, California Sampling and Analysis
Although PPE and good work practices will protect field personnel from direct contact and reduce the
contamination of PPE,instruments, and equipment, contamination cannot be avoided completely.
Contaminants can be transferred to clean areas and off-site,potentially exposing unprotected field
personnel and the public. To prevent such occurrences, general and site-specific safety rules, training, and
decontamination procedures will be implemented at the project site.
General cleaning requirements for field instruments (e.g.,tapes,meters)will include, at a minimum,
wiping down the equipment body, probes, and cables with detergent solution and rinsing thoroughly with
tap water. Re-usable equipment will be decontaminated either by steam cleaning or by washing, or by a
series of washings, using an industrial detergent and water solution, followed by a series of rinsings using
generous amounts of water. To avoid cross-contaminating re-usable sampling equipment, using a
decontamination solution rinse may be necessary, followed by a series of potable water rinses and a final
de-ionized water rinse. The rinse water will be collected in clean containers for appropriate disposal.
4.8 Investigation-Derived Waste
Any soil cuttings and wastewater that are generated during investigation activities will be identified as
investigation-derived waste(IDW)and placed in U.S. Department of Transportation-approved steel
drums, pending waste profiling and disposal. Waste samples will be collected and analyzed for VOCs,
total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline and diesel, and Title 22 metals,to determine the waste profile.
Following receipt of the analytical results, a manifest will be prepared for profile acceptance, and the
waste drum(s)will be transported to an approved facility for disposal.
4-5
