2.0 Site Description/Background Information
The site is a small single-story structure with a small parking lot situated on a rectangular, 0.058-acre
property located near the intersection of North Locust Drive and Main Street(Figure 1).
The facility was operated as a dry cleaner until around 1993 using various solvents, including
tetrachloroethene (PCE). A number of site investigations and regulatory reviews were conducted in the
vicinity of the Site under the oversight of the Central Valley Regional Board. The site investigation results
indicate that soil gas and groundwater samples were impacted with VOCs.
2.1 Scope of Work
This plan addresses health and safety issues involved with the following tasks:
• Collection of soil, soil gas, groundwater and air samples
• Installation of soil vapor probes
An Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) for each of these activities is presented in Appendix B of this HASP. If
the scope of work is altered or if additional tasks are assigned, an addendum to this HASP shall be
developed to address the specific hazards associated with these changes.
2.2 Project-Specific Information
2.2.1 Chemicals of Concern
The suspected contaminants found on this site may be exposed during intrusive activities. The routes of
exposure from these contaminants are primarily through inhalation of vapors and dusts and by direct
contact with contaminated media. See Table 1 for a summary profile of the hazards and control
measures to follow for the contaminants of concern (COC). This profile is based on recent site history
and site characterization. For more detailed and specific information, always refer to the Safety Data
Sheet(SDS) or equivalent information for the compound (see Appendix C).
Table 1
Contaminants of Concern Profile
TCE Colorless liquid(unless dyed blue)with 100 parts NE NE
a chloroform-like odor, irritation eyes, per million
skin; headache,visual disturbance, (ppm)
lassitude(weakness, exhaustion),
dizziness,tremor, drowsiness, nausea,
vomiting;dermatitis;cardiac
arrhythmias, paresthesia; liver injury;
2-1
