SOP-007 Standard Operating Procedure
Soil Sample Collection
Page 1 of 2 Revision No. 0 April 2019

Sharpe Army Depot
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) provides procedures for collecting soil samples.
1.2 Scope
This SOP applies to all personnel who collect soil samples from surface and subsurface locations.
2.0 Relevant Documents
This SOP is intended to be used in conjunction with the following documents:
• SOP-002: Field Activity Records
3.0 Equipment List
• Decontamination equipment including soap, de-ionized and tap water
• Health and safety equipment, including safety glasses and nitrile/latex exam gloves
• Field logbook, indelible ink pens, and field forms
• Rinse water receptacle and disposal area
• Sample bottles
• Chain of custody form
4.0 Procedures
4.1 Soil Boring Sample Collection
Soil borings will be located and identified by a temporary marker (i.e., pin flag or stake).
Depending on the nature and depth of the area to be sampled, a direct push drilling rig utilizing dual-wall sample retrieval will be employed to collect the subsurface soils. If required, during well installation, a hollow stem auger rig utilizing a split spoon (or similar sampler) will be used. Soil boring samples will be obtained at 5-foot increments from ground surface to total depth or the top of first groundwater—approximately 20 to 50 feet below ground surface (bgs).
Soil samples will be collected from a transparent PVC liner and/or metallic split spoon extracted from the borehole. The core will be split open lengthwise, and samples will be taken from the middle of the core or the predetermined sampling interval via the Terra Core sampling method (Section 4.2.).
The samples will be processed using EPA Method 5035A. Terra Core samplers will be used to acquire approximately five (5) grams of soil for each VOA vial per EPA Method 5035A. Each Terra Core sampler will only be used once per sample.
Samples may also be based at points along the core that appear most likely to contain contamination or the most likely path for contaminant migration. Choice of sample location will be based on requirements of the work plan and on the professional judgment of the project geologist/project engineer.
