While reviewing the analytical report, we noticed that the samples were analyzed for TPH-D with silica gel cleanup. We
checked the recently submitted sampling workplan, and that method is specified for future samples as well. However,
we request that future samples be analyzed without silica gel cleanup. Silica gel cleanup is used to remove petroleum
metabolites from the sample that would otherwise be quantified as part of the total petroleum hydrocarbons. It may be
difficult for the Water Board to approve closure of a site that used silica gel cleanup for petroleum samples.
Looking at past lab reports, it is unclear if the samples collected by Ponder on 6/2 2 /2 022 were analyzed with or without
silica gel cleanup. Would you or Scott be able to verify which method was used?
Thank you, and apologies for missing this earlier!
Best,
Holly Young
Engineering Geologist
Site Cleanup Program, Federal Cleanup Unit
Central Valley Water Board
11020 Sun Center Drive, Suite 200
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670
Tel: 916-464-4669
Email: holly.voung@waterboards.ca.gov
From: Vincent Blackwood <vblackwood@apexenvirotech.com >
Sent: Wednesday, July 20, 2022 8:46 AM
To: Richard Stiffler <Richard.Stiffler@stocktonca.gov>; Young, Holly@Waterboards <Hollv.Young@Waterboards.ca.gov>;
Taylor, Andrew@Wildlife <Andrew.Taylor@Wildlife.ca.gov >; zzCasey Sanders <csanders@apexenvirotech.com >; Fred
Mitchell <Fred.Mitchell@ponder-env.com >; Alaniz, John [EHD <ialaniz1@sjgov.org>; Manzo, Elena K.
