Portable tubs and rigid containers are removed from the building and taken to the north supply
delivery/loading area at either facility for disinfecting.
5. All exterior areas where decontamination is performed must be washed down with water prior to
leaving the area. This clean rinse water is allowed to run into the storm drain.
7. Reports of all spills, exposures or injuries resulting from the handling of medical waste must be
reported to Facilities Coordinator for review and follow-up. Documentation and further reporting
will occur as needed ending with the hospital Occurrence Reporting system.
III. TRANSPORTING COLLECTED MEDICAL WASTE
A. Biohazardous waste is removed from the source of generation by nursing and then placed into collection
tubs located inside dirty utility rooms at each facility. Environmental Service Technicians then transport
the collection tubs to designated areas for offsite disposal or sterilization, according to the facility.
Medical waste is transported from areas where generated to the waste storage cages or locked
containers by the most direct route, minimizing exposure to patients, visitors, staff, and community.
1. At no time shall Biohazardous Waste be transported inside an elevator where food products are
stored or being transported. Medical waste will not be placed in the compactor where routine
solid waste is collected for disposal.
2. Some types of medical waste generated at the MAIN FACILITY are processed using an
autoclaving biohazardous waste sterilizer. The waste sterilizer is located in the loading dock area
north of the building. (See section "MEDICAL WASTE STERILIZER" for additional information)
• Lodi Memorial Hospital; WEST FACILITY ............
