Lodi Memorial Hospital 8420 -EM -Section C2
Facilities Management 0 0 Page C-4 of 10
Environment of Care; Hazardous Materials and Wastes Management Revised: July, 2006
MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES
storage area for offsite disposal by a contracted service provider.
5. Medical waste collection tubs or carts are never used for anything except to transport or store
biohazardous waste items.
B. Transporting collected medical waste for waste sterilization at the MAIN FACILITY uses 1 single large size
cart. This cart is used only to transport collected red bagged medical waste to the waste sterilizer for
processing. This cart is never used for storage except for loads waiting for processing while the sterilizer
is in operation. Cart must be closed and locked when waiting for next processing cycle if waste has been
placed inside.
Disposal containers are lined prior to filling. Once filled, the liner is then closed off and tied into a
knot. The lid for the container is then securely fastened and pre-printed tracking label is applied
to the upper section of the container near the lid. The label is not placed on the container's lid.
2. Preparation of collected medical waste for off-site removal by contracted hauler:
Sharps containers must be placed into a barrel lined with the approved red liner. Once the
barrel is full, the bag must be tied-off and the lid placed securely on the barrel. The facility
identification label is then attached to the outside of the barrel for transportation. Larger
sized sharps containers approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as shipping
containers do not require further secondary containment and can be labeled for removal
providing the top is security fastened.
Used suction canisters should be placed into the smaller barrel lined with the approved red
liner. (The smaller size barrel is more desirable for stacking and lifting when filled as they
could be too heavy if placed into larger containers.) The suction canisters are also to be
contained inside the barrel using the red liners provided. Stack the used suction canisters
into the barrels right-side-up to avoid spillage inside the barrel. Position them is such a way
to maximize the space inside the barrel. Once the barrel is full, the liner is tied shut and the
barrel is labeled for transportation.
• Other medical waste in the holding area/cage must always be inside a lined barrel. Once the
barrel is full, the liner is tied and the lid securely fastened, the barrel then labeled with facility
identification label for transportation.
• All fully prepared barrels are moved to the section of the caged area designated for 'ready to
ship containers'.
C. LIMITED QUANTITY HAULING EXEMPTION
Staff in approved patient care areas such as Home Health Agency, Laboratory Services, Clinic Services,
etc., that provide extended health care services outside the confines of the hospital facility, are authorized
to provide limited hauling of small quantities of medical waste back to a designated facility for disposal.
Current list of authorized staff members is on file with copies of authorization provided to the individual
employee. Procedures for final disposal of this medical waste fall into the same categories as those in
place within the facility itself. Tracking documents remain on file for a period not less than three years.
D. STORAGE OF MEDICAL WASTE
Medical waste is not stored longer than 7 days. Storage is provided at locations outside the facility
