SUBJECT: B110HAZARDOUS WASTE POLIC'I'# 01 <br />MANAGEMENT P.•- 2 of <br />8. Sharps: Sharps, needles, blades, broken glass and arterial or intravenous <br />cannulas. <br />9. Pharmaceuticals: Prescription or over-the-counter drugs. <br />B. Urine, feces, saliva, sputum, nasal secretions, sweat, tears, or vomitus, unless it <br />contains fluid blood is not considered biohazardous and is disposed of in the <br />regular trash. Paper towels, paper products, and articles or products containing <br />non-fluid blood are also not considered biohazardous and are disposed of in the <br />regular trash. <br />A. Biohazardous waste, as defined, is placed in the closest appropriate container and <br />is routinely picked up by Environmental Services personnel except for the following: <br />Pathology waste and surgical specimens are handled according to EVS Pathology <br />policy. <br />C. All persons required to handle biohazardous wastes or materials will be provided <br />appropriate orientation, personal protective equipment, and on-the-job training by <br />their immediate supervisor or designee. <br />D. The lids to all sharps containers, pharmaceutical waste containers and biohazard <br />waste containers must be kept closed at all times. <br />E. No pharmaceutical, sharps or biohazardous waste is allowed on the floor. <br />Supplies, equipment or other items are not allowed on top of the containers, nor <br />should anything block access to the containers. <br />F. Segregating, storing, and transportation: <br />Biohazardous medical waste will be segregated from other waste by <br />containing it in a biohazard bag, defined as a disposable red plastic bag <br />that is impervious to moisture and has a strength sufficient to preclude <br />ripping, tearing, or bursting under normal conditions of usage and handling <br />of the waste filled bag. (The biohazard bag shall be constructed of <br />material of sufficient single thickness strength to pass the 165 -gram <br />dropped dart impact resistance test as prescribed by Standard D 1709-85 <br />of the American Society for Testing and Materials and certified by the bag <br />manufacturer.) <br />
