Biohazardous waste is separated and contained at the point of generation. <br />It is transported from the generation point to the secure storage area by <br />using rigid transportation carts that are covered and labeled with the <br />international biohazard symbol. <br />4. The storage area is secured so as to deny access to unauthorized persons. <br />Warning signs are posted in English and Spanish, identifiable at 25 feet. <br />5. Environmental Services personnel will clean up all spills of biohazardous <br />waste immediately. Any injury from handling biohazardous waste must be <br />reported to Employee Health. <br />6. Medical waste that has not been autoclaved is not stored for more than <br />seven days on the premises. <br />7. The following departments or areas are approved for all patient care waste <br />to be processed as biohazardous waste: Surgery, Short Stay Surgery, <br />Labor and Delivery, Dialysis, Central Processing, SICU, and the Central <br />Sterile Processing Decontamination area. <br />8. Needles and sharps are contained in red, rigid puncture -proof containers, <br />disposed of by Environmental Services according to policy. <br />9. Pharmaceutical waste is contained in blue pharmaceutical waste <br />containers, disposed of by Environmental Services personnel according to <br />policy. <br />G. Pre-treatment of all wastewater, including toilets and graywater from showers <br />and sinks, is required if the wastewater is generated from a patient diagnosed <br />with Ebola Virus Disease. <br />For toilet waste, disable the auto- flush if available and instruct the patient <br />not to manually flush the toilet. Add bleach (1 cup per bowl of 5% or <br />greater sodium hypochlorite) or low alcohol quaternary ammonium <br />disinfectant (with documented effectiveness against norovirus and <br />enterovirus) and hold for 15 minutes prior to flushing. <br />
