n <br />St. Joseph's Medical Center <br />Policies and Procedures <br />309.0 Pharmacy Waste Removal, Transport and Disposal Policy <br />309.1 Policy <br />n <br />Pharmacy Waste will be removed and disposed of from St. Joseph's Medical Center in a <br />safe and sanitary manner and in accordance with state, county and JCAHO guidelines and <br />regulations. <br />309.2 Procedure <br />A. Wearing Apparel <br />Gloves and a cover gown or apron must be worn when handling and transporting <br />Pharmacy Waste. <br />B. Removal <br />1. Pharmacy Waste from medical center departments is to be placed in the Blue <br />and White containers marked "For Incineration Only". <br />2. The containers must be snapped closed before transporting to the steam <br />sterilizer/compactor area. The lid must be checked to make sure it is <br />properly snapped on and sealed. <br />3. Pharmacy Waste can be filled no more that 3/4 full. <br />4. When ready for transport from the department to the steam <br />sterilizer/compactor area the containers must be stored in an area not <br />accessible to the public. <br />5. Full containers will be picked up and transported by Environmental Services <br />staff. <br />6. The containers can be carried or transported by cart to the waste processing <br />area. <br />7. In the Steam Sterilizer/Compactor area they must be placed in the blue <br />storage shed for pick up by a licensed Pharmacy Waste hauler. The blue <br />storage shed must remain locked when not attended. <br />C. Documentation <br />The licensed Pharmacy Waste hauler will provide manifests for all Pharmacy <br />Waste picked up from St. Joseph's Medical Center.
