i <br />rinfedtious Material, conued -2- <br />1. It is best to cover these, especially stoppers. <br />2. Gloves should be worn when handling large volumes of material. <br />Dispose into autoclavable containers. <br />3. Street clothes should be protected by covering with lab. coats or <br />aprons. <br />B. Centrifugation: <br />1. Keep covers closed. <br />2. Centrifuge biologics with stoppers intact when possible. <br />3. For AFB use covered shields. <br />4. Clean centrifuges regularly with 25% Clorox and 3% Phenol if in <br />Microbiology. <br />C. Avoid mouth pipetting. <br />1. Pipetting devices are available as well as automatic pipettes. Use <br />these when pipetting serum and other biological material. <br />2. Place disposable pipettes in To Be Autoclaved containers. <br />3. Decontaminate pipettes used in Microbiology. Autoclave disposables. <br />D. Use care when flaming contaminated loops. <br />VII. Hand washing: <br />A. Wash hands when leaving laboratory areas to go to lunch, coffee breaks, <br />smoke breaks, etc. <br />B. Use ample soap and water. <br />VIII. TB Safety precautions: <br />A. Prevent aerosols - TB is most infectious in inhaled aerosol droplets. <br />B. Do all work on open specimen containers and cultures inside hood. <br />C. Air flow - run hood fan whenever someone is working in the room. <br />D. Hood - work on phenol soaked paper towels. When finished flood the <br />hood with phenol and let air dry. Run UV light for 30 to 60 minutes. <br />E. TB material - place some phenol in containers before using. Small con- <br />tainers for liquids, larger containers for solids. Place containers in <br />wash room autoclave with 11not autoclaved from TB room" sign placed on <br />autoclave. Do this at end of each working day.Lab. housekeeper will <br />autoclave. <br />F. Flaming of loops - before flaming, clean contaminated loops in alcohol - <br />sand bottle. <br />G. Slides - should heat fix on slide warmer for two hours. If you take them <br />off before, then flame them inside hood. <br />H. Hand washing - wash hands with ample soap and water. Rinse with 70% <br />alcohol and allow to air dry. <br />I. Protective clothing - gowns, masks, and gloves are available. They ho <br />should be left in the room when not in use. It is advisable to use <br />gloves when working with known positive TB. <br />J. No eating, drinking, smoking, and no pipetting by mouth. <br />K. Always use automatic pipette. Use disposable pipettes for contaminated <br />fluids. <br />
