Infectious material, c*inued -3- <br />L. Restrict travel in and out of the TB room. <br />M. Health of personnel - TB lab. personnel should be healthy. Fatigue, <br />emotional stress, malnutrition all reduce resistance to TB. Tuberculin <br />testing on negative reactors should be done every 3-6 months. X-rays <br />should be taken on positive reactors every year. <br />N. Accidental contamination - cover area with phenol (ophene) soaked paper <br />towels. Flood with phenol (ophene). Leave hood fan running and evacuate <br />personnel from the room for 30 minutes. <br />IX. Precautions: hepatitis antigen and antibody testing <br />A. Gloves should be worn. <br />B. Cover street clothes - disposable gowns are recommended to cover all <br />clothing. <br />C. Cover work areas with plastic -backed absorbent paper. Dispose of this <br />by autoclaving when finished. <br />D. Clean up all spills with 25% Clorox. Allow to stand 5-10 minutes. <br />E. Autoclave all disposable material used before discarding. <br />F. Autoclave all reagent bottles containing antigen before discarding. <br />X. All specimens collected from possible hepatitis patients should be marked <br />with yellow preprinted tape. <br />XI. Disposal of microbiological wastes: <br />A. Contaminated culture specimens and media. <br />1. Place all material for disposal in autoclavable bags in containers <br />marked TO BE AUTOCLAVED. <br />2. Specimen AFB centrifuge supernatants will be discarded into the dis- <br />posable containers provided. Pour some phenol into container before <br />using. <br />3. Lab. housekeeper will pick up containers, tie the bags, and load <br />material into autoclave. EXCEPTION: All material from the mycobacterium <br />lab. includine the waste paper basket will be taken to the autoclave by <br />the tech who is already masked and gowned, at the end of working day. It <br />is to be placed in autoclave and sign "Not Autoclaved TB Material" placed <br />on the autoclave. <br />?� <br />4. All material, with the following exception , will be autoclaved%otr,J <br />minutes with 15 lb. pressure, at 121 degrees C. Mycobacteriology lab.���°C <br />material will be autoclaved for 45 minutes. Indicator tags will be _( <br />placed on all bags to insure that material is decontaminated. All <br />material that is disposable is to be placed in a paper Ecolo bag. When <br />full the bags will be stapled shut and removed to the trash compactor. <br />The trash compacted material is removed to a sanitary landfill disposal <br />site and dumped. <br />5. All fungus cultures are placed in a metal can marked "FUNGUS CULTURE <br />TO BE AUTOCLAVED". These are autoclaved as above on three different <br />days to insure decontamination. If disposable discard as above <br />B. Blood specimens for discard and all other blood contaminated material: <br />1. This will be placed in waxed cartons in the lab. department marked <br />"TO BE AUTOCLAVED." <br />
