Sharp waste is placed in sharp containers until 3/4 M, then the sharps <br /> containers are sealed and transferred to the secured medical waste storage areas. <br /> Standard precautions, including ha ping are practiced one and after these <br /> procedures. <br /> Storage areas: <br /> • There is a designed storage or areas for containment of medical waste. <br /> • The medical waste storage area or areas are secured to deny access to <br /> unauthorized persons. <br /> • The medical waste storage area or areas provide protection from animals, vermin <br /> and natural elements. <br /> • The medical waste storage area or areas are marked with warning signs adjacent to <br /> the entrance. <br /> • The signs are in English and Spanish and legible from at least 25 feet. <br /> • Signs read "Caution=Biohazardous Waste Storage Area - Unauthorized Persons <br /> Keep Our. <br /> • Compactors, grinders and trash chutes are not used to process or transport medical <br /> waste. <br /> • Proper Ventilation is maintained to prevent odor. <br /> • Environmental supervisors are assigned to supervise the storage, transporting.. and <br /> maintenance of the medical waste storage area or areas. <br /> • The staff developer is assigned to property in-service and the monitoring task for <br /> medical waste personnel and procedures. <br /> Procedures: <br /> Assigned staff are to contact the environmental supervisor before transferring medical <br /> waste to the medical waste storage area or areas.
