Management of RCRA/Hazardous Pharmaceutical Waste Page 2 of-7
Conservation and Recovery Act(RCRA),including chemotherapy/biotherapy wastes are stored,
handled, packaged, transported and disposed of in accordance with all federal, state and local
government regulations.
III. Definitions:
Hazardous Drugs (HD) -Drugs that are capable of causing toxicity to personnel and others who come
in contact with them.Hazardous drugs pose a potential health risk to personnel who prepare, handle,
administer and dispose of these drugs.Drugs may be classified as hazardous when they possess any
one of the following characteristics:
- Genotoxicity
- Carcinogenicity
-Teratogenicity
-Reproductive toxicity
-Organ toxicity at low doses
-Structure and toxicity profiles of new drugs mimic existing drugs determined to be hazardous by the
above criteria
-Potential exposure routes to hazardous drugs may occur through inhalation, skin contact, skin
absorption, ingestion or injection.
P-listed waste-includes unused, commercial chemical products that are acutely hazardous waste when
discarded. The P-list can be found in Federal regulations.
U-listed waste-includes unused, commercial chemical products that are hazardous waste when
discarded. The U-list can be found in Federal regulations.
Ignitability characteristic-identifies hazardous wastes that can create fires under certain conditions,
are spontaneously combustible, or have a flash point of less than 60°C(140 °F).
Corrosivity characteristic-identifies wastes that are acids or bases (aqueous solutions with pH less
than or equal to 2, or greater than or equal to 12.5) or liquids that are capable of corroding metal
containers.
Reactivity characteristic-identifies wastes that readily explode or undergo violent reactions or
release toxic gases or fumes when heated, compressed, or mixed with water
Toxicity characteristic-identifies wastes likely to leach dangerous concentrations of toxic chemicals
into ground water.
D-listed wastes—identifies wastes possessing one or more characteristics of Ib itability, Corrosivity,
Reactivity, or Toxicity
N.
