Management ofRCRA/Hazardous Pharmaceutical Waste Pace 3 of 7 <br /> H. California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) <br /> California regulations are more stringent than federal regulations and impact pharmaceutical waste <br /> management. All pharmaceutical waste that meets the definition of federal hazardous waste <br /> (RCRA)must be managed as such and is under the jurisdiction of Ca1EPA Department of Toxic <br /> Substances Control(DTSC).A pharmaceutical waste that is federally non-hazardous but meets the <br /> expanded definition of a hazardous waste in California is considered a"California only hazardous <br /> waste" and must be managed under the Medical Waste Management Act. <br /> V. Procedure: <br /> Procedure Res onsibili <br /> 1. Properly segregate waste at point of Nursing,Pharmacy,Imaging <br /> disposal by placing into an available Staffs <br /> RCRA black container <br /> 2. Replacement containers for containers Nursing,Pharmacy,Imaging <br /> which contents are at the fill-line can be Staffs <br /> obtained by contacting Environmental <br /> Services directly <br /> 3. Pickup and replace container;transfer full EVS Staff <br /> container to the Centralized Hazardous <br /> Waste Storage Room. <br /> 4. Proper segregation, collection, Safety Officer or Hazardous <br /> containment, storage,labeling and Materials Coordinator or EVS <br /> accumulation will be periodically Director <br /> monitored to ensure proper practices. <br /> 5. EVS staff will be initially oriented and Safety Officer or Hazardous <br /> annually updated as to proper practices Materials Coordinator or EVS <br /> for handling of RCRA pharmaceutical Director <br /> waste containers. Training records are <br /> maintained. <br /> A. Identification: <br /> 1. Black RCRA containers are placed in departmental areas that utilize pharmaceuticals <br /> considered hazardous under RCRA. The size of the RCRA container will depend on the <br /> anticipated amount of waste. Locations generating hazardous pharmaceutical waste: <br /> 0'Main Soiled Utility Room <br /> 4d'Main Pyxis Medication Room <br /> ICU Soiled Utility Room <br /> 3rd Main Pyxis Medication Room <br /> 3rd East Soiled Utility Room <br /> Labor&Delivery is Medication Station(East) <br /> 2nd Main Medication Room <br /> 2nd East Soiled Utility Room <br /> Preoperative Holding Unit <br /> Cardiac Cath Lab 91 <br /> Cardiac Cath Lab 3 2 <br /> Surgery PACU <br /> Surgery Soiled Utility Room <br /> ED Soiled Utility Room <br /> ED Nursing/Pyxis Medication Station <br /> http://dhalts01/policy/policy.nsf/2b0145f9f8180bc28725727600642564/1 a68480abe9cecfl... 3/18/2015 <br />
