They are set upside down to dry. This process may be sped up by
placing them in a fume hood to dry.
a) If the lab is out of clean, dry sulfuric acid sample bottles, they can be rinsed
with acetone after the tap and DI water rinses. This must be done in a fume
hood, and the bottles must be left to dry in the fume hood.
v. Ammonium Hydroxide (aqua) sample bottles should be emptied into the 2.5-gal
plastic container in the hood in the Special Analysis Lab. When full, an Ammonia
Storage operator or a Pellet Plant operator should recycle the aqua appropriately.
1) Aqua sample bottles should then be air dried in the hood to remove any
ammonium hydroxide, then rinsed 3 times with DI water, and allowed to dry.
vi. If a sample bottle needs extraordinary cleaning, see lab manager for instructions.
c. Acetone Transfer & Disposal of Acetone Waste
i. Care must be taken when transferring clean acetone from the 5-gallon drum into
the dispensing safety drum.
1) A bonding wire should be attached to unpainted points on both drums to
prevent a buildup of static electricity that may discharge and ignite the acetone
fumes.
ii. Excess acetone used in the cleaning of lab glassware and sample bottles shall be
collected in a 1-gallon plastic container in the fume hood in the Special Analysis
lab. This container shall be emptied into the acetone waste drum in the back
chemical storage area. A bonding wire will be attached to an unpainted area of
the valve on the funnel and to the handle of the plastic container to prevent a
buildup of static electricity that may discharge and ignite the acetone fumes.
r + 4- i i i }
