Other Chemicals
i. Other lab chemicals that are not 1) acidic or basic liquids that can be neutralized
and poured down the drain to the lined ponds, or 2) plant material that can be
recycled back into the plants, must be disposed of according to the
recommendations in the SDS. This may include organizing lab pack and pickup
by a disposal company.
1) Certain hazardous chemicals that the lab uses regularly have designated
Satellite Hazardous Waste accumulation containers in the lab area. These must
be labelled appropriately and can only be stored for up to one year. Before the
end of the year, the current container must be shipped out for disposal and a
new Satellite accumulation container set up.
2) A weekly inspection of the satellite accumulation containers must be
performed and documented. An example of the Weekly Inspection Form is
included as Appendix B.
References
1. National Research Council. 2011.
