Albertsons /Vons
Designated Operator Training
UST review (tank diagram/photos)
• Show how alarm panel, tanks, and dispensers are connected
• Gas in sump/UDC is dangerous and law requires immediate response
• Show how fuel can get to sumps & UDC's causes alarms on the alarm panel
• Ask who has seen people smoking out on forecourt?
• Explain how gas is volatile &flammable—vapors can ignite
• Informed that tampering with or disabling monitoring equipment is against the law (employee can
be prosecuted).
Alarms
• Employees shown alarm panel location
• Alarm Response—ask who has responded to alarms and what did they do?
o Notify SolvOne for any release related alarms.
o Alarm Log Location —Document date, time, alarm type, and action taken
o Receive work order form from maintenance contractor for clearing alarm condition—need
to be able to prove that there was no problem or problem was fixed
o File document(s) in designated binder/file system
o Alarm panel inspected daily. Panel should indicate"All Functions Normal" —ask who is
responsible for this? Manager?Assistant Manager?
o Verify all alarms except delivery needed have been responded to. If an overfill alarm
occurs on the monitoring panel and alarm outside then verify that the driver does not spill.
Carbon Dioxide
• The small gas cylinders, containing 20 to 50 pounds of liquid carbon dioxide, must be stored
upright and be firmly secured with chain to the wall.
• Liquefied carbon dioxide is an extremely cold liquid/gas and is stored under high pressure in a gas
cylinder, which can cause the cylinder to rupture if the safe relief valve fails to operate.
• Store away from heat and ignition sources and out of direct sunlight.
• Do not touch cylinder, the extremely cold part of pipes and valves on top of the cylinder will cause
moist flesh to stick fast and tear when one attempts to withdraw from it.
• A leak will result in the formation of dry ice, and contact with dry ice, liquid carbon dioxide, or cold
gas can cause frostbite to skin, eyes, and exposed tissues.
• If there are signs of visible ice on the cylinder or parts such as pipes, it is a sign of a leak and
needs to be reported to your manager immediately.
• Breathing low concentration of carbon dioxide can cause nausea, dizziness, mental confusion, and
visual disturbance, shaking, headache, and respiratory problem.
• In the event of release, evacuate the store, and allow the liquid/gas carbon dioxide to evaporate
and the gas to dissipate.
• Do not attempt to close the main source valve to stop the release is not recommended unless it is
safe to do so and you have adequate personal protection gears.
• A release may be indicated by a hissing sound or ice on valves and an indoor release can result in
asphyxiation. Evacuate building.
• Contact SolvOne (877)989-5020 for assistance
Emergency Procedures
• Emergency Contacts/"Quick" Procedures
o Ask who knows where to find emergency procedures and phone numbers?
o Employees are shown emergency contact numbers and procedures guide (should be near
register). Emergency Contact List
o Review contents in general
o Important to have accurate 24 hour site contact. Ask manager to correct or fill in if
necessary.
• SDS
o Show the response procedures of the hazardous chemicals found on site.
o Reference in the event of ingestion, contact or exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Safeway/Vons Designated Operator Training 10/21/2020
Page 1 of 3
