PLANNING DEPARTMENT
1810 E. Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, CA 95205 ,
Dear Mr. Islas:
SCH #84010311 - COUNTY ACQUISITION OF A PORTION OF AN EXISTING LANDFILL
The Department has reviewed the subject Environmental Document and has the
following comment:
San Joaquin County proposes to purchase approximately 114 acres of.a 160-acre
parcel of land presently owned by Foward, Inc. The remaining portion of the
160 acres will continue to be operated by Forward, Inc. as a Class II-1 dis-
posal site. The County may eventually develop a Class II-2 sanitary landfill
on the purchased property.
The Department believes that the use of this property as a sanitary landfill
would be appropriate if a buffer zone is established along the _side of the
Class II-1 disposal site. However, San Joaquin County should be advised
that there is ongoing controversy about the past operation of some of Forward's
Class II-1 disposal trenches and there may be a potential for hazardous waste
to migrate from its present disposal location. If there is future migration
of hazardous waste onto or into the proposed sanitary landfill area, it may
affect the future operation or closure of the landfill site. This issue should
be addressed during the environmental review which will be conducted prior to
the actual development of the Class II-2 area.
If you have any questions about the above comment, please contact Wade Cornwell
at (916) 739-3145:
Sincerely,
Anthony J.
